In Dumfries, our clients were the local housing association and our placemaking task was to provide detailed proposals for the community spaces contained within the neighbourhood renewal masterplan. These varied in size from small play areas through to a sizeable public park.
Among the recommendations from the placemaking project was the need to create a heart for one area of dense housing. The suggestion was that one of the play areas which had been required by planners should be re-designed to create a ‘village green’. This gave the landscape architects enough community support to challenge the play requirement in the local plan and the village green is now part of the finalised plans for the area.
